New Premium Feature: KEYWORDS!

Posted on January 29th, 2009 by Chris Coyier

We have released a new feature that I think many people are going to like. In fact, I know they will as we’ve had quite a few people specifically ask for this: Keyword Search.

Here is how it works:
When you add a new site to your list (or edit an existing one), you will have the option to specify keywords. This is a string of 20 characters max. When we check your site, we will look for this specific string of characters. If we don’t find it, your site will be marked as down.

What is this for?
It’s to make sure your site is really, truly online and responding as normal. Let’s say your web server is up and responding normal, but your database goes down and your site requires the database to work. Your web server might respond with “Error establishing database connection.” This is a valid response which our system may interpret as up. But clearly your site isn’t up. They keyword check would then fail and you would be notified. Powerful stuff!

We are reading the real HTML code from your website for this, so if you have text that reads “About The Author” but the HTML for it is is really: <strong>About <span>The</span> Author</strong> – that will fail the check. Make sure it’s just a regular string of characters uninterrupted by other tags.

As the title suggests, this feature is only available to premium service subscribers.

  3. Salim says:

Oh, i just noticed its premium :P

  4. Great idea. I was using the free version and the same exact thing happened to me, DB corruption.

  5. Nick says:

This should be part of all tiers, not just premium. As I’m to understand, if my site is serving an error then your service would still say it is up. How this service is proving useful to people without this implicit feature is beyond me.

  6. So that why I couldn’t find it… I’m on the wrong tier!

  7. Manu says:

    At 95 $ / too expensive …. :o (

If the Pro version is at 50 $, i’ll buy it.

If not : i’ll keep the FREE version …..

  8. Charlie says:

What happens if this site goes down?

  9. Jon says:

Great feature! I’m working on a split web server and db server setup. This is sweet! Will purchase when my site is up.
