Teething, As It Were

Posted on January 6th, 2009 by Chris Coyier

Some quirky behavior today that one of our users aptly named “teething pains”.

  • Some users are seeing double emails when a site goes up or down.
  • Some users are seeing sites go down that are not really down, or vice versa
  • Some users got a text message about a site being back up that wasn’t in their list
  • Some users are getting “site back up” emails when their site never went down

Sorry about that! But don’t worry! Just some quirks that we are working to resolve. Bear with us through this teething phase.

yes, this has happened to me twice now:

Some users got a text message about a site being back up that wasn’t in their list

    are you working on this?

    Thanks!

    Anthony

  2. Yes, we are working on this, and have just pushed a new code update. Please let us know via the contact form below if you still have any of these issues.

    Thanks!

    Hi.

I’m still getting loads of email saying my sites are back up but I’m not getting any emails saying my sites are down. Just to give you a heads up.

    Great service btw!

  4. Peter Green says:

I keep getting notifications of a site being down, I never get a message saying it is up again, but is up when I check it.
It is one of two and is the one I host at home, I have not received any notifications about the other being up or down.
I have removed them from this system for now as I don’t want the e-mails but will put them back later to see if that helps.
Thanks for the service and good luck with ironing out the bugs!
    Peter :o )

  5. Andrew Turner says:

Just received an email regarding a site being down, Even though it’s chugging on.. :P

Also got two similar emails earlier today, and one yesterday.

  6. Harold says:

Yesterday I panniced because my sites were indicated as “Site is down or otherwise erroring.” but no e-mail showed up and sites were actually up…

Today the e-mails did show up, so I panniced again! But sites are up…

Guess that’s what you get if you want to be the first to try a new free service ;-) I’ll just wait and see what happens!

Thanks for all the reports guys. Some of this stuff is fixed although we are seeing some false-downs still. Hang in there =)

  8. Bryan Price says:

After getting a bunch of texts about sites that aren’t mine, I decided to see if it was a beta problem. Glad to see that it is! :) My first text was a double message that my site was now up, when it never said it was down. Then a few sites that weren’t mine. Then it said one of my sites went down when it was still up, and then a whole slew of sites that weren’t mine, and the latest was a double that my site was back up.

I find it interesting that it’s my second site listed that’s going through this. Different hosts I guess.

  9. TJ Roy says:

I am seeing the issue with one of my sites but not with the others. These are all hosted on the same server, that is also being monitored by other software.

I get a false down/up sms message. Pretty cool app though, and will keep giving it a chance.

    Good job guys! *thumbsup*

    TJ

  10. Emma says:

So, I’ve got a site that I am having you guys monitor, but I notice that it says it’s down. We have some back-end coding that pulls our homepage in an unconventional way. Could this be the problem?

  11. Hey guess we are still having this issue, getting a false down (and then multiple sms’s) Site ID 3321

    Thanks,
    Phil

  12. Bryan Price says:

I’m still getting double text announcements about the site being back up. Getting text announcements about the site being down when it’s still up. And I’m still getting texts about sites that aren’t mine.

I’ve zeroed my phone number as my wife is complaining about the messages I’m getting at 4AM (the message ring tone being Hicks saying “Game over, man, game over!” from Aliens… Yes, I’m a Geek)

I’ll turn them back on… later.

  13. Robert says:

I’m getting other people’s notifications- site up/down notice for sites I have not registered.

  14. Andrew Turner says:

    Hey Guys,

Looking good, but getting emails regarding sites that aren’t down.

Oh also, here’s a suggestion, if multiple sites go down at the same time, could all the notifications be sent in one email?

  15. Bryan Price says:

You’re not clearing a field on your texting or it’s a buffer overflow.

I erased my number. Five minutes later I had 8 texts from you in one minute all on sites I didn’t enter. Haven’t gotten one since. So something isn’t getting initialized or cleared that contains the phone number.

Says my site is down when it’s up. Weird.

  16. Keith says:

I’ve been having the “sites are down when really up” issue several times per day since I signed up (about a week ago?). I dunno what the problem might be – but I’ll keep reporting it so you know.

  17. Chris Coyier says:

Thanks for all the reports everyone! All this is great feedback and very valuable. We are still working away at clearning up all these bugs. Whatever other info you have on weird behavior is appreciated.

  18. Pablo Jusem says:

I get a report daily that it is down when it isn’t. A few hours later I get notified that it’s up again. Does your service check all the links on a website or does it simply ping the web site? There are internal links on the page that are down on purpose–rather, we haven’t taken the time to removed them. Thanks!

    • Chris Coyier says:

We only check the root site, none of the links on the page are checked. We are in the process of rewriting some of the engine that checks sites to be a little smarter and prevent some of these false reports, thanks for bearing with us!

  19. UQ Events says:

Love the site. Looks great and very simple to use. We’ll let you know if we experience any duplicate email or other problems.

  20. Jon says:

Getting a lot of false positives over here… what are you using to determine if a site is up? I’m running several rails applications and passenger is set to spin down if there isn’t activity for a period of time. If you try to hit the site it may take 5 seconds before it responds if no instances are spun up… is that affecting me? If you do use some sort of time based check, why not provide that as a user option. In my case I’d set it to something like 10 seconds of concurrent inability to get the site to respond before setting it as not up.

    Thanks,
    -Jon

  21. Rob says:

I’m still getting a lot of false positives. Had two today.

    Regards,

    Rob…
