Status of SMS and Cell Providers

Posted on January 5th, 2009 by Chris Coyier

In order for us to send SMS text message notifications to your cell phone, your cell service provider needs to have an email to SMS gateway for us to work with. For the time being, this is the only way. Keep reading to see our status with the providers you guys have suggested so far. regarding Status of SMS, I do not see Fido [canada] which is owned by rogers[in the list] but fido isn’t. any plans to add?

  2. Giulio says:

Hi there, I found this page on vodafone IT webpage and thought that would be of some help, even thought only ten sms can be send for free (woo how bad) but then says it’s a free service: http://snipurl.com/9j1jr

    TRANSLATED CONTENT
“Send SMS to Vodafone cell phones from your email address.

    How it works
Compose the SMS using your email client, then send it to 3**XXXXXXX@sms.vodafone.it
On the sent message your email address will display.
The text must not exceed 132 characters.
You can send up to 10 free SMS per day.
To make use of the service, you must register to the website http://www.vodefone.it and use the email address provided for registration
Example:sending a SMS from your email to the number 348/1234567, the recipient address is 3481234567@sms.vodafone.it

    How much does it cost?
    The service is free.”

  3. Pedro Lobo says:

First off, let me just say WOW. Great idea and service. I would also like to sugest Vodafone Portugal.

    Thanks and Cheers,
    P.

  4. Harold says:

Hmmm mail to sms, didn’t even know regular providers did this… I use a sms gateway from an other company that supports it. Wouldn’t that be a solution? Using a third party system to send out the sms?

    • Chris Coyier says:

That is what we used to use, and then that company went under, which was a huge pain. Doing it this way eliminates any ties to another company that might do the same thing.

What is the company you use?

      • Harold says:

I use the sms gateway of Mollie.nl, I think the international sister website is Zaypay.com (both owned by Stash.nl).

  5. Jordan says:

    Great service.

Can you add 3 UK to the list to check out. Thanks

  6. Andrew Turner says:

    Chris,

Seeing as Optus won’t work i know of an Australian online web SMS service that is launching an API soon for this sort of thing.

I can email you the details for this.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

  7. Lazlow says:

Could you confirm if Virgin Mobile is UK? As I’ve entered my mobile (beginning 078..) and haven’t yet received any SMS messages, even though my sites have been down on numerous occasions.

Congratulations on a great free and simple service!

    • Lazlow says:

Just realised I could have answered my own question – I’ve changed the number now, so that it begins 4478 (replacing the 0). Let’s see if that works.

    • Chris Coyier says:

If that actually works for you please let me know. I’ve been trying to sort out how this international phone number thing works and so far we have no reports of it working yet. If we can get it working with one person I can spread the word for everyone else.

      • Lazlow says:

I see this service is temporarily down, but once it’s back up I’ve amended my settings. Removing the 0 and putting the international code (44 in my case) didn’t work, or at least I’ve not yet received an SMS. I’ve now changed it to be +44[number-minus-0] as spotted a few other SMS gateways on the ‘net appear to use that format.

      • Chris Coyier says:

We’re in the process of bringing this back up (in fact, I think it’s back up now), so please let me know if you do in fact get an SMS message with your international number.

I really want to get it working with someone so I can spread the word on what is working.

  8. TJ Roy says:

Alltel in US is working successfully. Saw it on the drop down option when signing up, but do not see it on the “Working” list of your blog post.

    Great service, thank you.

  9. Altaf Sayani says:

Is that possible to add Telenor Pakistan in the list?

  10. shekhar says:

Could Not find Vodafone India in the list. kindly update me if you have this Unique SMS service for Vodafone India

  11. saajay says:

Please add Bharti Airtel – India to the list

  12. Michael says:

Will you be adding Skype as a phone/SMS provider? That would give you unlimited coverage!

  13. Michael says:

So all we need now is an add on for Firefox that sits in the Quick Launch area and everyone will be happy. Great product!

  14. Eric says:

    Please add 3 Mobile (Sweden).

    Thanks!

  15. Charlie Page says:

Would be cool to have Cincinnati Bell added :)

    Thank you.

  18. Pallav says:

    Brilliant idea. :)

Can u add Cellone owned by BSNL(India)…

    Cheers.

  19. Belgium does not seem to be represented yet, Proximus (Vodafone) is the market leader there, that would be a nice addition (and a good excuse for me to promote your service around my contacts).
Nice job with this and the website design.

  20. Fine Tuning says:

Could you please check Bouygues Telecom (France)? It’s the 3rd carrier here. Maybe not a priority but would be useful to a lot of people.
    Thanks for building this service.

  21. Kabelux says:

Hi!! This is awesome! Please, could you add a mobile carrier from Brazil – Oi TNL PCS S.A? Thank you for this great service!

  22. zagq says:

    http://www.tele2.se

    Thanks for this great service!
    -Simon

  26. francisco says:

    Hi
    great service :D
    could you add TELCEL MEXICO?
    thanks :)

  27. Eiatheplaya says:

To save you some trouble, I just checked the two biggest Norwegian operators and they no longer offer email to SMS gateways. It used to be:

    Netcom:
    phonenumber@sms.netcom.no
    (Needed GSMPost subscribtion)

    Telenor:
    phonenumber@mobilpost.no
(Activation needed on Telenor’s “My Page”)

    But not anymore apparently :(

  28. Chris Coyier says:

…Brings up a good point. If anyone wants to speed the process along for your own Cell Provider, you can go ahead and do a little research on their website and see if they offer an email-to-SMS gateway. That’s what we need to make it work. Shooting us a link or posting it here would be very helpful.

  29. Claudio says:

Les dejo las extensiones para Argentina:
    [number]@sms.movistar.net.ar
    [number]@personal-net.com.ar
    [number]@sms.ctimovil.com.ar
    [number]@nextel.net.ar
    ejemplo:
    numero 54 0261 155 886 932
    542615886932@sms.movistar.net.ar

    Muy buen servicio, gracias

  30. Danny says:

    And for Ecuador? :(

  31. Paul Davis says:

I see Virgin UK and T-Mobile UK, but would O2 UK work?

  32. Chris Coyier says:

O2 is UK only as far as I know. Give it a show if you can get it working for you. I’m still not sure on the exact formatting for international numbers, so if you can get it working definitely let me know.

    • Paul Davis says:

I’ll add it and wait then, I’m on a (mt) GS, so it shouldn’t be too long before my sites go down!

Just so you know, a UK (mobile) number always starts with “07″ like “07123 456789″, for international calls & texts to the UK, you replace the “0″ with “+44″ to get “+447123 456789″. =]

    • Chris Coyier says:

I’m actually starting to think you probably DON’T need the country code or the + or anything. Probably just the 10 digits that make the base of the number. Try that? If you want add a site we can bring up and down to test, shoot me an email (chriscoyier@gmail.com)

  33. Olivier says:

    Hi guys,
    bigup for the job made.
What about a connection with Mobistar (belgium)
I thing they are in the same family as big french carrier

    keep us posted!
    thanks

  34. Piggy says:

    I just love this service!

Will ’3 UK’ be added any time?

  35. caroig says:

I don’t see Movistar(Spain) they are the national carrier’s service. Looking forward to signing up.

  36. Shaan says:

    Chris…thankyou! This is awesome :D
I’ll probably be the only person to ask this, but in South Africa we have Vodacom (which I think could be part of Vodafone). If you need me to find out anything from them let me know

  37. dB says:

    What?! None in Finland?

  38. Dan says:

Does the Virgin Mobile one work in the UK?
    I can’t get it to work…

I’ve changed mine to T-mobile(Uk) at the moment because I’ve found out in the UK, Virgin basically resell T-Mobiles’s services… I’ll see if that works!

  39. Ivan Fong says:

I love the idea of this service!

Will ‘3 Hong Kong’ be added any time soon?

  40. Chris Melin says:

Would love to see Telia (Sweden) added :)
